Showcasing the next generation of Markham’s Jazz Stars
Do you want to play in this year’s Markham Jazz Festival?
Here’s your chance! The Markham Jazz Festival All-Star Big Band
(MJF All-Stars) is open to any student who attended a Markham area
high school during the 2007-2008 school year.
Students selected for the MJF All-Stars will play during a prime-time
spot at this year’s festival - Saturday night, August 16, at 8 pm on the
Main Stage - right before the headline act: the Rez Abbasi Quartet.
Participation in the MJF All-Stars is by audition and is open to students
playing saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass & drums only.
If you would like to audition, please email the following information to
artisticdirector@markhamjazzfestival.com. (See pdf at the bottom of this page)
For the audition, please prepare two jazz pieces (solo transcriptions, stage band parts, etc.) in contrasting styles (swing, ballad, latin, etc.); you will also be asked to sight read and improvise.
Audition requests must be received by Friday, June 20th. Auditions will be scheduled for Tuesday, June 24th, with rehearsals beginning the following week. There is a $10 audition fee – please bring this with you to your audition.
Leon Racine, jazz teacher at Bayview Secondary School, and Jill Morrison,
music teacher at Reesor Park and John MacRae Public Schools, will be
directing the MJF All-Stars. Remember – audition requests must be received
by Friday, June 20th by email to artisticdirector@markhamjazzfesetival.com.
We look forward to another great season with the MJF All-Stars and look forward to seeing you soon!
