Frequently Asked Questions about the Markham Jazz Festival

Q:  Is there an admission fee?
A:  No, it’s FREE. Our sponsors pay for the entire bill.

Q:  Where exactly is the Markham Jazz Festival?
A:  Performances are held at:

  1. Main Street Unionville - north of Highway 7, west of Kennedy Road. Two stages – the Millennium Bandstand at the corner of Main Street and Fred Varley drive, and the TooGood Pond stage which is located in the parkette behind the Varley Art Gallery

  2. Main Street Markham – on Sunday afternoon the street will be closed, and there will be two stages located on Main Street between Hwy 7 and Bullock Drive

  3. Markham Farmers’ Market - Markham Road, 2 lights north of Highway 7 at Robinson Street (Saturday from 10 am until noon)

  4. Hot Spots are restaurants across Markham and Unionville that feature smaller jazz groups on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Q:  Where do we park and what is the cost?

A:  There are lots of parking spots behind Unionville Main Street (east side) and in the residential areas surrounding the street. The Markham Farmers’ Market has a parking lot adjacent to the Market. And the Markham Museum has lots of parking too.  The good news is parking is FREE at all locations.

Q: Are alcoholic beverages available at the Festival?

A:  Yes, nearly all the restaurants and pubs are fully licensed and many have outdoor patios for your enjoyment. In addition, the TooGood Pond venue will have a licensed area.

Q:  Can we sit down to watch the shows?

A:  Yes, many of the stage areas have seating available.

Q:  What are the Festival times?

Unionville: Friday, August 15 from 7 pm to 10:30  pm; Saturday August 16 from 12:30 pm   to 11 pm; Sunday August 17 from 1 pm to 6 pm.

Markham Main Street:  Saturday, August 16 -  10 am to 1 pm;  Sunday August 17 from 1 pm to 5 pm pm

Q:  Are there any special shows?
A:  On Thursday, August 14th., there will be our 11th. Anniversary Gala featuring Phil Nimmons and David Braid

Q:  Are you selling t-shirts again this year?

A:  Yes, we have a wonderful design created by Helen Walter of Capstone Communications. . These are available for a $20 donation to the Markham Jazz Festival.  New this year are Markham Jazz Festival caps.  Booths will be at the Main Stages.

Q:  Can I buy any of the performer’s CDs?

A:  Some performer CDs  will be available at the same booth as the t-shirts.

Q:  Is Main Street Unionville closed to traffic?

A:  Yes, but only on Saturday evening.

Q:  Can I get there by bus?

A:  Yes, to find exact directions, visit the York Region Transit website www.yorkregiontransit.com or the Toronto Transit Commission’s website www.ttc.ca.

Q:  Is the Festival wheelchair accessible?

A:  Yes, the festival is held on the street so most areas are accessible.  The Museum is also wheelchair accessible.

Q:  What if it rains?

A:  The Markham Jazz Festival goes on, rain or shine.

Q:  Where can I get an Entertainment Schedule?

A:  The Festival brochure is available at most of the stores and restaurants on Main Street Unionville, Main Street Markham,  Markham Village BIA, Sponsor locations, community centres, libraries, Information Markham (at the Civic Centre) and many area hotels including the Hilton Suites and the Courtyard Marriott.   The schedule is also  posted on the website and can be printed off.
