The 2008 Up Close & Personal Evening promises to be one of the great highlights of this year’s Markham
Jazz Festival, combining the great music of Phil Nimmons and David Braid with great wine and hors
d’oeuvres, with the fun of winning great prizes.
If any two people represent the past, present and future of Canadian jazz, it has to be the inspired duo of
clarinetist Phil Nimmons and pianist David Braid. This duo of 84-year-old Phil Nimmons and 32-year-old
David Braid performs spontaneous music, structured improvisation without any initial conception of structure.
Nimmons is a legend in his own time and unique in Canada as a performer, composer, educator, clinician
and artistic director of music programs and composer of over 400 original jazz compositions.
Braid is touted as one of Canada’s most gifted young jazz pianists and composers, a multi award winner
who has written over 60 works and unveiled his first orchestral piece which blended jazz form, symphonic
composition and improvisation.
